Abstract: 

Addressing the environmental challenges associated with spent lithium-ion batteries, this project introduces a circular approach that integrates interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary methodologies to develop a sustainable waste management framework. Leveraging expertise from materials science, environmental engineering, and industrial chemistry, the project establishes an innovative model for resource recovery and waste valorization. A holistic strategy optimizes metal extraction processes while repurposing recovered carbon materials for industrial wastewater treatment, enhancing both resource efficiency and pollution mitigation through sustainable adsorption techniques. Incorporating treatment residues into geopolymer synthesis ensures the complete utilization of recovered materials, reducing landfill waste and minimizing the environmental footprint of spent LIBs. The transformation of waste by-products into high-value construction materials reinforces circular economy principles, supporting sustainable industrial applications. This integration exemplifies a closed-loop system, promoting resource efficiency and environmental sustainability. Strong interdisciplinary collaboration between Austrian and African research teams fosters knowledge exchange and bridges gaps between academia and industry. Collaborative efforts contribute to the development of best practices in sustainable waste management, creating a scalable and economically viable model. Anticipated outcomes align with global sustainability goals, demonstrating innovative solutions for lithium-ion batteries waste management while advancing environmental preservation and resource efficiency.
