The University of São Tomé and Príncipe (USTP) is a public institution of higher education that results from the need to create a structure capable of bringing together the different institutions and poles of formation in order to confer functional and institutional uniformity to higher education in São Tomé and Príncipe. The USTP was created through Decree-Law no. 9/2014 by decision of the Government of São Tomé and Príncipe and constitutes an emanation of the Basic Law of the Educational System that institutionalizes University and Polytechnic Higher Education in the structure of the National Education System. This process is therefore a result of the desire to bring together, in the same institution, several areas of knowledge, thus creating better conditions to accompany the contemporary evolution of science, technology, arts and humanities. Its teaching, research and extension activities are national in scope; it enjoys scientific, pedagogical and administrative autonomy. The USTP objective is higher education, research and extension that allows qualifying citizens with capacity for entrepreneurial action and independent reflection, necessary for the sustainable development of the country.
